Why Daily Prayer? And Why Pray with Scripture?

The practice of praying with what is called a "daily office" is truly an ancient tradition, and it reflects the wisdom of having our days saturated with prayer and with moments to be mindful of ourselves and our God. We're mapping out the day for our souls before the journey of that day gets started. Without this kind of practice it's just all too easy to be swept away in the hustle and urgency of a day's many needs and distractions, and to end up where we didn't want to be.

While we don't always know what each day holds for us, many times we do know exactly the kinds of pressures, conflicts and anxieties we will face. Let's be ready for them all, the known and unknown, by having our souls ready.
This is the point of a daily office, a workout plan to strengthen the soul and have our interior lives settled and ready for whatever our exterior lives will meet in a day. And what better a place to find some of the words for those prayers than in scripture? Our scriptures are filled with people just like us, parents, kids, artists, teachers, sinners and saints, people lost and people found... trying to make it through some great days and some days of great trial.
So on this site you'll find a short daily office, based on hearing and praying with scriptures. Sometimes we quote a scripture passage, and that will always be from the New Living Translation of the Bible unless otherwise noted. Sometimes we will pray the words of a scriptural character or author, and other times we will pray a paraphrase or a poetic application of their words.
As the site grows we'll add more prayers, possibly adding in some other times for the daily office, like a late night Compline service, and some scriptural-based prayers we can turn to in times of joy and trouble. I hope you'll stay around for the journey!
Be blessed, Rev. Todd
